Record Turn Out for Safety Day 2010

By Gregor Weeks

3.27.10, There was still a March chill in the air, but that didn't stop over a hundred people from showing up at Skydive Delmarva's Safety Day.

For the second year in a row Lance Lippencott showed a video highlighting a few potentially unsafe situations that happened at Skydive Delmarva the previous year. The video clips sparked several informative discussions.

Jumpers were then encouraged to participate in several optional activities including emergency procedure practice. After the Safety Day events were over, several loads flew then the season's first bonfire was lit.

5th Annual Mike Schultz Skydiving Skills Meet Results

Skydive Delmarva hosted the Fifth Annual Mike Schultz Skydiving Skills Meet on the weekend of September 19-20. Three teams of four jumpers with varied experience levels competed in events that encompassed several facets of skydiving. The Meet was named for Mike Schultz who has been a shining example of comradery and good sportsmanship in skydiving for over 40 years.

The first event was Formation Exits. On Day 1 Team Otter Droppings with Gregor Weeks, Braden Hestermann, Andrew Wilson and Javier Hernandez earned 10 points for launching a Meeker. On Day 2 Team TJ3 earned 10 points for launching a Diamond.

The next event combined two skills: Speed Formation and Formation Skydiving. Team Otter Droppings had the best jump on Day 1 posting a score of 13. On Day 2 Team Otter Droppings and Team Skid Row with Mike Davidson, Harry Kerill, Ron Hudson and Steve Smith both socred 5 points on their jumps.

The final event, called "Stack Out," began with teams directing the pilot to a pre-declared spot then exiting individually. The goal then was to fly a disciplined pattern, maintaining the same order from exit to landing, and to land as accurately as possible. On Day 1 Team Otter Droppings had the best jump, earning 19 out of 20 possible points. Team Skid Row had the best score on Day 2 with a perfect 20.

Jumpers were also scored on landing accuracy on every jump. Concentric 10-meter rings were valued at 10 points in the center, with subsequent rings worth 8, 6, 4, and 2. Jumpers were awarded one bonus point for touching down on a 12 inch disc in the center, and two bonus points for a standup landing with both feet on the disc.

Team Otter Droppings won the Overall Team Award. Team Skid Row won the Team Accuracy Award. Gregor Weeks took the gold medal in individual accuracy, barely edging out Mike Davidson by 1 point on the last jump. Jim Shorter took bronze. Meet Director Mike Davidson, Judges Bruce Roberts, Larry Robinson and Thalia May, Manifestors Suzanne Harrington and Carly McQuown, and Pilot Keith May deserve high praise for a fun, well-run event.

Skydive Delmarva Jumpers Rock Bridge Day 2010

By Gregor Weeks

10.16.10 Congratulations to all the Skydive Delmarva jumpers who jumped at Bridge Day 2010, especially to Tyler Naiman and Tyler Price who made their first BASE jumps. Both of them leapt from the 876 foot bridge, deployed their canopies at the right moment then expertly navigated the narrow gorge to stand up landings in the small landing area next to the river, a feat that often eludes more experienced jumpers.

Jeremi Arroyo made his first Bridge Day jump. Andrew Wilson and Laurel Callen both did their first gainer exits. David Coco made two nice wingsuit flights. Ian Mitchard pulled off a nice quadruple gainer from the diving board. Scott Regina did his first jump on a round parachute. Elliott Barstow made several nice jumps. Vlad Merker, Jerry Burdsall, Gregor Weeks and Javier Hernandez all made their first BASE jumps since Bridge Day 2009 and did not look rusty at all. Michelle Carlstrom and Laurel Callen made a jump together, both looking good in free fall.

Angel Regina, Saba, Elizabeth Storke, Jeremy Swoyer, Dan McLellan and Bonnie Arroyo were on hand to check out the action.
