Tandem Skydiving Meanings: Tandem Jump Safety

Did you know that over half a million people try skydiving every year? This is a large number, and it’s not just for the tens of thousands who have made skydiving their hobby. In addition to the jumpers who’ve acquired a certificate, there’s a huge amount of people who want to do a tandem jump for the first time. Are you one of them? Then, continue to read.

What Is Tandem Skydiving

Tandem skydiving is a relatively new form of parachuting technique that enables people to jump together without prior experience, as long as the jump is performed together with a certified instructor who has made at least 500 jumps.

In a tandem jump, first-timers parachute together with a certified instructor/trainer using a tandem parachute system designed especially for two. The tandem parachute system includes the tandem parachute itself, a chute, a load cell, a holding bag, and accessories like goggles, and, in some cases, a helmet.

When the equipment is used as instructed during a jump, it provides a high-speed, high-altitude skydive with a short time of freefall following the jump.

You’ll attach yourself to an instructor and will freefall for approximately 55 seconds before your parachute opens, allowing you to glide back to the ground. The whole skydive lasts around 15-25 minutes. It might be the most thrilling minutes of your entire life, we promise!

However, is this practice really safe? Continue reading to find out.  thrilling minutes of your entire life, we promise!

Tandem Skydiving Techniques

Your instructor will attach you to your harness at four points: both your shoulders and both your hips. You will be able to look around and see your instructor as you fall through the air.

The instructor will be responsible for operating the equipment, including deploying the parachute and returning you to the ground. You will also need to ensure your body is in the right position for exit and freefall.

It is a fact that any person who jumps out of an airplane for the first time will be nervous. You can choose to tandem skydive with a friend or experienced skydiver so you can relax and have the best experience of your life.

Skydive Tandem Safety

Again, if you are new to skydiving and/or don’t have the required experience, you will be unable to jump alone and must join an instructor for your first jump. It is always advisable to talk to an experienced class instructor before taking your first parachute jump.

When it comes to tandem skydiving safety, no matter how secure your parachute is, there is still a chance that it could open too early during the jump or that it itself could fail while you are in mid-air.

Your instructor should also give you specific information regarding the safety of parachuting in potentially dangerous conditions such as low visibility, thunderstorms, high winds, and icing.

You can find an appropriate instructor by contacting one of the dropzones that provide tandem sky jump services.

Popular Tandem Skydiving Centers In The USA

There are many well-reputed tandem skydiving centers (dropzones) all across the country where you can learn to jump in the air with a trained instructor. Some of the most popular skid training centers are located in California, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

So what is a tandem skydiving center, more exactly? It is a school that is certified and authorized to teach tandem jumping, meaning that the school is fully equipped to provide students with the highest quality safe instruction possible. That is, you don’t need to buy any equipment to do a tandem jump.

If you do choose to skid in the air with an instructor, it is advisable to wear a proper safety parachute which is regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration. These regulations set a maximum weight limit for the parachute and the length of time that the parachute will remain in the air (i.e. it will not pop out).

Safe Parachute Landing

When the parachute does become deployed, this is referred to as inflation. When this occurs, there is a significant increase in the potential for the parachute to fail. Due to this increase in the risk of the parachute failing, many skydive instructors will only permit tandem skydiving if both participants are in great health and are able to jump comfortably without support from another person.

So, what should you expect from your instructor at your first class? To begin with, they will instruct you on the safety aspects of jumping. They will also train you how to parachute properly so that you do not cause injury to yourself or others.

Furthermore, they will instruct you on how to get yourself into the right position for a safe canopy skypasta (parachuting) and how to deploy the parachute. Lastly, your instructor will take you through a checklist of pre-determined parachute jump exercises so that you can become proficient in skydive landings.

Tandem Jumps To Learn Solo Skydiving

A tandem jump is a preferred choice for first-timers. They are much more enjoyable, or at least safer, than solo parachuting. You can jump in a matter of minutes, instead of requiring a day of ground school and continuing lessons and practises.

If you decide to skydive solo, it’s fine! You may find that your previous experience as a tandem student will prepare you for your career. In other words, your first jump will be your starting point to a career as a solo skydiver.

Skyjump Solo Or Tandem

In the USA, a parachutist can only freefall alone if they have an A-licence from the United States Parachute Association.

So, skydiving in tandem is the best option for first-timers. Dropzone staff will not allow you to jump solo on your first freefall, anyways.

You will need to attend formal classes before you can freefall solo. Instructors will hold your gear, but you won’t be able to use it. You will need to do at least 25 jumps and pass a written test.

Tandem Skydiving For Charity And Marriage

This is a popular choice for people who are celebrating a large birthday. It’s a great way to celebrate the occasion with an adrenaline-fueled adventure in the air. It is also a popular way for romantics to propose. Many lovebirds have made the leap and then asked for our blessings. It’s definitely memorable!

Skydiving for charity is very popular. People will support you if you are trying to raise funds for a worthy cause. The dropzone can usually help with any questions or organizational requirements you might have if you’re jumping for charity or a special occasion.

Getting Filmed When Skydiving (camera flyer)

Most instructors, dropzones, and centers offer a videography service that will help you preserve your memories and share them with your loved ones. This means that you will have a dedicated camera flyer, who will interview and join you on the plane before you jump.

They’ll also jump out with you when it’s time. They will fly directly in front of your face in freefall and film the entire thing. This makes for an amazing video!

How Exciting Is Tandem Skyjumping

It’s something that you will remember for a lifetime. Even after thousands of jumps, many of us still recall the feeling of the wind in our faces as we fell through the air for the first time. The incredible peace and quiet that came with the first parachute ride is memorable.

Your experience will be a part of your life for all time.

Training For A Tandem Jump

You will be jumping with a tandem instructor, who will do the majority of the work during landing. Therefore, you won’t need to take any skydiving school before you jump.

Before you get ready, you’ll be shown an instruction video and get introductory guidelines. This will teach you a bit about the equipment, and how to help your partner in the freefall and landing. This can all be done before you skydive so there is no need to do any training.

What About Group Jumps With My Friends?

Parachuting can be shared with friends. Your friends and you can ride together on the plane, but once it’s time to jump, you will be tied to your instructor.

As a safety precaution, tandem partners cannot jump simultaneously. You can still watch your friend land if you jump first.
